For the love of curls!
This is my sweet little family. My husband, Jacques, and sweet, little, curly-haired baby girl, Madison. Speaking of curly hair, she has a head full of it. Over the past couple years, I have been exploring the right products suitable for her. I want nothing more than for her to love those gorgeous ringlets and know how to take care of them. Here are a couple of products that I have found and am loving, along with our routine.
Shampoo & Conditioner
I have found that my daughter’s hair requires lots of moisture and less frequent shampoos. When we do cleanse or shampoo her hair, I use low lather cleansers. These are Curl Co-Wash products that can be found by Deva Curl and Kenra. These particular shampoos contain no sulfates, no parabens and no sodium chloride.
After her shampoo, I condition with a curl styling conditioner. While the conditioner soaks into her curls, I let her play in the tub for a bit before we rinse. Once her hair is clean, I do a cool rinse and wring out all the excess water.
As I said before, her hair needs the extra hydration so we typically finish up by doing a treatment and applying Heaven in Hair by Deva Curl. I add a generous amount the ends and areas that tend to tangle and feel dry.
We rarely ever use any heat on her hair. I wick away moisture with micro-fiber towels, or even a shammy towel does wonders!
In my efforts to try and keep her curls in form and reduce frizz, I will either add Kinky-Curl leave-in conditioner or a little bit of her styling cream.
Refreshing & Styling
My child sleeps all over the place and her bed hair is a force to be reckoned with. We, fortunately, have found that silk sheets and silk pillow cases help with the frizz a little, but really, there is only so much you can do.
As far as morning hair routine is concerned, it’s all about refreshing her curls. I dampen her hair a little before adding Curl Refresher spray by Kenra or the Deva Curl Mist-er Right Dream Curl Refresher spray. After the curls are back in place, we finish it off by adding Styling Cream. I feel like the curl refresher spray is important because it helps rehydrate and bring the curls back to life between washes.
Occasionally, if we got a bath early and she is in a patient mood, we opt for “princess hair” and twist out or braid it before she goes to sleep. Either way, that’s our typical wash-and-go routine.
This weekend, Madison is the flower girl in a wedding, so we will be styling to elongate her curls. This process will take a little more time. We will be using a few different products for a tighter hold. Check back for a link to a video on the styling process and finished look.
As there is with all beauty products, there are an absurd amount of choices for curly hair. I would love to hear about the products you have used. I’m still on the search for ways to lengthen her curls as well as an incredible, tried and true detangle product. Share your tips, tricks or products you love in the comments section.
